Cook Islands teaching opportunities - Preparing for the trip

Cook islands home | Application details | Preparing for the trip

Will there be a Cook Islands Information Session?

Yes, there will be Cook Islands Information Sessions held during Orientation Week.

How much will it cost?

At this stage it is anticipated that the cost will be $3,500 per person. This covers your return airfare to Rarotonga, shared accommodation, airport transfers, and Australian airport departure tax. The cost is not fixed because of fluctuations in currency exchange and the airline reserves the right to change the airfare at their convenience.

What is not covered in the cost?

Food, transport, Cook Islands departure tax ($NZ25), tourist indulgences and travel insurance. This is an island community, so prices are not cheap (a little more expensive than at home).

Last year students were subsidised by Monash International. Will that happen again?

All students are eligible to apply for a Monash Abroad scholarship ($500). All successful applicants will be emailed a Monash Abroad application. This application needs to be submitted at the first workshop on 4 April, 4:30pm.The subsidy will be paid prior to leaving for the Cook Islands. Many students use the subsidy to supplement their living costs while away.

What if I have to pull out?

If, for legitimate reasons, you have to pull out, every effort will be made to find a replacement for you. If a replacement is found you will be refunded in full, however, if a replacement cannot be found you will be liable for any airfare and accommodation cancellation fees that may be imposed. You may forfeit your deposit as some charges may already be incurred and a refund not possible.

How do I arrange travel insurance?

There are many travel insurance options. We suggest that you shop around. STA offers student rates. Please also note that many credit cards include travel insurance. Check with your provider.

What about transport? How will I get to my school?

Some schools will be within walking distance. For schools not within walking distance we recommend that you use the round island bus service. Buses are reliable and frequently stop at schools.

Other transport on the island includes car, motor scooter and bicycles which can be hired from various rental companies. In order to rent a car you need to produce your Australian driving licence and apply for a Cook Island driving licence (cost $NZ10 no test required) To ride a scooter you must get a licence. The licence cost is $NZ10 and you must do a practical test. If renting, we strongly recommend that you do so from large, reputable companies such as Avis and Budget (equipment is well maintained and service is usually prompt).

If you intend to use a motor scooter we highly recommend that you bring the appropriate helmet for your protection as they are not readily available in the Cook Islands. In addition, if riding a bicycle we strongly advise that you take a reflecting light.

What is expected of me?

You will be expected to do 15 days of teaching practice including attending professional development sessions as directed. You will be expected to conduct yourself professionally and to represent the Faculty and the University. You will be expected to attend briefing and debriefing sessions, to support each other and behave in a mature and professional manner in and out of the school environment. You will be expected to conform to, and respect, the customs of the community you are becoming a part of and to travel and live with the group. There will be plenty of free time to do nothing, do tourist stuff and just enjoy yourselves, but remember you are not going to the Cook Islands as tourists.

What is there to do in our spare time?

Swimming, diving, snorkelling, tennis, golf, bushwalking, sightseeing, horse riding, fishing and much much more. See this online guide to Cook Islands. Ensure that you have the appropriate insurance to undertake such activities (read the fine print).

Can family and friends come along?

Friends and family CANNOT accompany you under any circumstances. This is a Faculty of Education policy.

Can I travel to the outer islands?

Weekends are free time and students are welcome to travel to the outer islands. It is best to plan such trips in advance. Please visit the online guide to Cook Islands to make arrangements.

Can I make my own travel and accommodation arrangements?

As this is an official international practicum, students must travel with the group and accompanying lecturers. There is also no option to have separate accommodation or a single room. Only shared accommodation is available.

Do I need a VISA or any VACCINATIONS?

Australian citizens do not need a visa but you will need a current passport. Your passport needs to valid for a minimum of 6 months from your return date. If not travelling on an Australian passport you will need to check with the relevant consulate and the Australian consulate of their VISA requirements. Vaccinations are not required but some vaccinations are recommended. Please read the travel advice provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
