"Being Digital in School, Home and Community" research project

Investigating the implications of young people's engagement with ICT for education

The fundamental purpose of this research study was to understand more about the current generation's digital communication practices and the implications for schools. The project aimed to generate comprehensive and detailed accounts of young people's engagement with digital technologies and to consider the implications for school education. We wanted to better understand the diffusion, uses, experiences and significance of new technologies among young people and the complex ways in which these technologies are entangled in their everyday lives.

The project was funded for 2005-2007 by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grant.
The present study also paralleled international efforts by researchers in Brazil, Greece and South Africa who are pursuing similar investigations in their own countries. It is hoped that, taken together, these projects will offer a valuable perspective on the state of play vis-à-vis 'young people and new media'.
