Dr Cutter-Mackenzie has been contracted to evaluate the Schoolgrounds for Learning project, offered by the Gould Group. The program is offered to up to 150 teachers, and combines face-to-face workshops, an eLearning training program and teacher mentoring to empower teachers to transform their schoolgrounds.
Schoolgrounds for Learning helps address the growing realisation that the traditional 'turf and tarmac' model for school grounds is not catering to all the physical and social needs of students in the 21st century.
Schoolgrounds greening projects provide a vehicle for authentic student learning opportunities that help meet the requirements of new Essential Learning Standards and have the potential for significant social benefits as demonstrated by international research. Recognising the value of both the planning process and the end result, Schoolgrounds for Learning is designed to involve students, teachers, school leadership and the wider community throughout the process. Teachers are provided with education and resources to facilitate a transformation of their schoolgrounds, to incorporate sustainability, wide resource use, and increased learning opportunities. It is outcomes such as these which will be investigated by the researchers.
The aim of this evaluation is to engage students, teachers, principals, families, community organisations and stakeholders to evaluate the educational, environmental and economic outcomes of the program.
The key research phases are:
- Pre/Progress survey
- Teachers as Researchers
- Post-survey
Teachers are invited to participate in all phases of the evaluation.
Grant: $24,000
