Development of Professional Teacher Standards in Environmental Education (Pilot project)

A team of Monash University researchers and the Australian Association for Environmental Education are developing professional teacher standards and learning with and for the teaching profession. This is a pilot study taking place in Victoria. We are currently looking for Victorian primary and secondary school teachers to:

  • Develop draft environmental education professional teacher standards for accomplished primary and secondary school teachers;
  • Develop and trial appropriate assessment and recognition procedures.
Teachers are invited to participate in all phases of this project.

The phases and specific research methods are:

Phase Aims Research Methods
Phase 1 (around Aug - Dec 2008) To develop, in extensive consultation with the profession of teachers and environmental educators, environmental education professional teacher standards for accomplished primary and secondary school teachers across Australia A series (3) of focus group (interview) consultative workshops with primary and secondary teachers in Victoria and Australian Capital Territory.
Phase 2 (Term 4, 2008) To develop appropriate assessment and recognition procedures for accomplished teachers in environmental education Participation in the development and implementation of an action research cycle. This involves participants creating a teacher portfolio or profile demonstrating selected standards. Teachers will also be invited to participate in the assessment/recognition process involving an interview with the research team.
