English language requirements for Postgraduate courses

The following English language requirements are effective from July 2008 and apply to both domestic and international students:

Postgraduate courses with a practicum

Postgraduate courses offered by the Faculty which contain a practicum component have the following minimum English Language requirements:

  1. At least three years of study (preferably in the last five years) in a university or approved tertiary institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution. A faculty interview to assess oral proficiency may be required;
    OR
  2. IELTS (academic) of at least 7 with a score of at least 7 on speaking and writing and at least 6.5 on reading and listening;
    OR
  3. Internet-based TOEFL of at least 100 with a score of at least 25 for writing and speaking, and at least 22 for reading and listening.

Note: All test scores must be no more than 2 years old at the time of application [or accompanied by evidence of substantial study in a tertiary institution where courses are taught and assessed in English].

Courses to which these requirements apply:

  • Master of Psychology (Counselling);
  • Master of Psych (Counselling)/PhD;
  • Master of Psychology (Educational and Developmental);
  • Master of Psych (Educational & Development)/PhD;
  • Master in Counselling, and Master of Education and Postgraduate Diploma of Education with a specialism in:
    • Inclusive and special education (if practicum is taken)
    • Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
    • Teaching Languages Other Than English

Postgraduate courses without a practicum

Postgraduate courses offered by the faculty which do not include a practicum have the following minimum English language requirements:

  1. At least two years of study (preferably in the last five years) in a university or approved tertiary institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution;
    OR
  2. IELTS (academic) of at least 6.5 with at least 6.5 on reading and listening and at least 6.0 on writing and speaking;
    OR
  3. Paper-based TOEFL score of at least 580 with a TWE of at least 4.5, or an internet-based score of at least 90 with at least 22 on writing and speaking and 20 on listening and reading. [Note: a computer-based TOEFL score of at least 237 with an Essay Rating (ER) of at least 4.5 will be accepted for entry in 2008, but it is no longer valid from 2009 onwards.],
    OR
  4. Successful completion of the Monash University English Language Bridging Program (MUELBP) or an equivalent program, at the appropriate level. See guidelines for entry into MUELBP.

Note: All test scores must be no more than 2 years old at the time of application [or accompanied by evidence of subsequent substantial study in a tertiary institution where courses are taught and assessed in English].

    • Early Childhood
    • Gifted Education
    • Information and Communication Technology in Education
    • International Education
    • Leadership, Policy And Change
    • Literacy Studies
    • Mathematics and Science Education
    • Music Education
    • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) - International
    • Teaching Languages Other Than English (LOTE)
    • Work and Learning Studies
  • Master in Organisational Leadership
  • Master in School Leadership
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Organisational Leadership
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Organisational Leadership
