Secondary teaching specialist areas and prerequisites

For students commencing in 2012

The following information is to help students studying secondary pre-service programs with specialist area unit selection. Students should refer to the Specialist Area Guidelines on the VIT (Victorian Institute of Teaching) website for more information.

Specialist araes require the following pre-requisites:

Languages Other Than English - LOTE (Single and Double specialism) A major sequence (Post Year 12) in Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Indonesian, Hebrew, Japanese or Korean plus proficiency in spoken and written language. Science A minor sequence in General Science which includes at least two of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science/Geology and Physics OR a minor sequence in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science/Geology and Physics together with a part in another of these areas. Social Education A minor sequence in social science, eg Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Geography, History , Legal Studies, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology together with a part in another of these areas of study. Visual Arts 1 & 2 (Single and Double specialism) A major study in relevant area(s) of Visual Arts (eg, photography, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, multimedia) which includes at least one quarter of a year of practical Arts content. Legend of the terms:

  • Part: Successful tertiary study in a subject having the weighting of at least one quarter of a year of full-time study in the course from which it is derived.
  • Minor Sequence: A total of half a year of successful full-time tertiary study, usually comprising sequential discipline study taken over two years, e.g. a part in each of the first and second years of tertiary study, or equivalent study.
  • Major: A total of three-quarters of a year of successful full-time tertiary study, usually comprising sequential discipline study taken over three years, e.g. a part in each of the first, second and third years of tertiary study, or equivalent study.
  • One year of study: One year equivalent full time tertiary study.
